The Justice Studies Center of the America (JSCA) and Conselho Nacional de Justica de Brazil are organizing the VIII International Seminar on Judicial Management “Strategic and Technological Planning for Today’s Demands,” which will be held November 28-30 in Brasilia, Brazil.
Past versions of the seminar have been held in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Peru and Paraguay. The purpose of the event is to explore and discuss the strategic and technological planning processes of judicial branches at the intra- or inter-institutional levels, identifying accumulated experience and best practices. Participants will consider the implementation of ICTs and how they and the procedural changes mentioned above can be particularly useful for the analysis and adoption of measures for confronting massive demand for judicial services and ensuring that users’ fundamental rights are protected.

The main topics to be considered are: -Strategic planning for Supreme Courts -Strategic planning for meeting the increased demand for services -ICTs at the service of justice administration
As has been the case in the past, the discussions will be complemented by the presentation of papers describing innovative experiences in the management of the various areas and work processes of justice system institutions, that is, judicial branches, prosecutor’s offices and public defender’s offices. The papers need not focus exclusively on the main topics of the seminar.
In addition, the seminar will feature such innovative aspects as:
- A Best Practices Fair (stands) focused on ICTs as instruments for improving the effectiveness of the provision of jurisdictional services; and
- A Web platform that will serve to disseminate seminar materials and contents, allow for live online transmissions of the event, and provide a virtual platform for the Best Practices Fair.
The Best Practices Fair will give courts and public institutions an opportunity to present technological solutions, information services and ICT tools that may contribute to the effort to handle massive caseloads, the streamlining of trial processes, rationalization and transparency of court expenditures, and increased communication among judicial system agencies and between said agencies and the public in order to guarantee access to justice and protect citizens’ fundamental rights.
The seminar is geared towards high-ranking representatives of judicial branches from throughout the Americas; legislators; high-ranking officials from court, prosecution services and public defender’s office administrative units; budgeting, finance and project evaluation specialists; executory unit directors; management consultants; and international cooperation agency officials.
