The purpose of the Center’s Internship Program is to enrich JSCA’s work by providing professionals and students from various countries in the Americas and, in some cases, other continents opportunities to participate in our activities. The program allows the Center to create and maintain lasting links with institutions and local experts.

 

JSCA offers three types of internships:

 

o Pro bono

o Paid

o Senior

 

To date students from Germany, Finland, Brazil, Guatemala and the United States; attorneys from Guyana, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Argentina; and specialists from Canada, Ecuador, Mexico and the United States have completed internships at JSCA.

 

Pro Bono:

These internships are directed at students and young professionals who wish to participate in JSCA activities for periods of two to six months. The program allows participants to develop knowledge and experience in areas related to justice reform in the region. Internships are completed at our Santiago headquarters. Interns are placed in JSCA’s Training, Management and Information, Research, Press and Communications or Events Areas according to their interests and the Center’s needs.

The tools needed to carry out your work.

 

An opportunity to maintain contact with the Center from your university or place of study or work and to participate in the networks that JSCA supports.

 

A certificate of participation and letters of recommendation.



Requirements

  • Applicants must be advanced students or young professionals in areas that are related to the topics that JSCA addresses (law, administration, communications)
  • Applicants must be willing to work part or full time at JSCA (this decision is made on a case by case basis)
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 20 and 25
  • Applicants who are not native speakers of Spanish must be proficient in Spanish.

     

Applicants should submit the following documents to JSCA

  • Application form
  • Resume
  • Letter of intent (no more than one page in length) in which the applicant describes his or her interest in completing an internship at JSCA.

     

Once all materials are received, JSCA will evaluate the application and send a letter of acceptance or rejection directly to the candidate. Decisions are based on availability, the applicant’s profile and ongoing projects.

 

Paid Internships:

 

Directed at young professionals from Latin America and the Caribbean who wish to carry out specific tasks related to the topic of justice reform, this hands-on training program provides opportunities for acquiring a broad range of professional skills.

 

The Paid Internship program offers participants an opportunity to develop their professional skills and allows JSCA to enrich its work and create lasting links with institutions, students and professionals throughout the Americas.

 

Two six-month internships are awarded through a competitive process held once a year by JSCA. Internships are carried out at JSCA’s headquarters in Santiago de Chile.

 

Paid interns work full time at the Center and collaborate on ongoing projects and programs, particularly those related to the interns’ areas of interest. Interns work in the following areas:

What does this program offer?



A professional program at the Center’s headquarters in which the intern collaborates on ongoing projects and takes part in day to day activities

 

The tools that the intern will need in order to perform his or her duties

 

An opportunity to receive training in specific areas and to work with professionals from various countries in the Americas

 

An opportunity to publish the results of the internship in one of the Center’s regular publications

 

An opportunity to remain in contact with the Center and to continue to collaborate with JSCA from the intern’s place of study or work


A certificate and letters of recommendation

 

A monthly stipend, lodging (rent and condominium fees) and round trip airfare between the intern’s home country and Santiago


Requirements


Applicants must:

 

  • Be a national of an active OAS member state
  • Hold a university degree in a related field
  • Be proficient in written and spoken Spanish and one other OAS language
  • Be between the ages of 23 and 30
  • Be in good health (compatible with the position) and have a health insurance policy with broad coverage that is valid in Chile

 

 

Senior Internships:

 

This program is oriented towards professionals with broad experience in justice reform and judicial public policy in the countries of the region. Applicants are required to have a specific research project related to JSCA’s areas of focus that they wish to develop or finish during their time at the Center. The institution does not provide funding or remuneration for this type of internship. Each senior intern is responsible for securing the resources that he or she will need in order to carry out their work at JSCA.

 

What does this program offer?

 

  • Technical support and office space for up to six months

  • The tools required to develop the work

  • The opportunity to take part in ongoing projects and daily activities at the Center

  • The opportunity to remain linked to JSCA and to join the networks that the Center promotes

  • A certificate indicating that the individual completed the program and letters of recommendation based on their performance

Requirements

  • Legal professionals linked to criminal justice reform processes in the region who are at the mid-point of their career may apply to this program. Potential participants include litigators and professionals who work on the development of public policy and/or at criminal justice system institutions, academic institutions or non-governmental organizations.

  • Interns may choose a full or part time schedule.Each applicant must have a specific research project.

  • Applicants must show that they have funding approved for the project.

  • Applicants who are not native speakers of Spanish must demonstrate knowledge of the Spanish language.
